Almo
is a small, unincorporated town in south-central Idaho, near the Utah border. Its known for its scenic, historic and geologic significance. Almo is an authentic western town, located near the entrance to the City of Rocks, a world-renowned rock climbing destination of dramatic geological granite spires and monoliths. There are over 500 climbing routes in the City of Rocks alone, with most routes being traditional climbs. A number of sport climbs have been set in the City of Rocks, which climbers refer to as simply "The City." The California Trail passed through what is now the City of Rocks. Wagon trains of the 1840s and 1850s left the Raft River Valley and traveled through the area over Granite Pass into Nevada. The names or initials of emigrants written in axle grease are still visible on Register Rock. Ruts from wagon wheels can also be seen in some of the rocks. The town of Almo offers modern amenities for visitors and the Almo Outpost was developed with tourists in mind. The Outpost offers mountain biking, rock climbing, guided horseback riding, camping, cattle drives, hot springs and many other adventures. Almo offers unique accommodations and eateries, including a restaurant called "the best little steakhouse in Idaho." Almo is also located near Castle Rocks State Park, which offers camping, horseback riding, multiple-use trails, rock climbing, mountain biking, historic wagon exhibits and outstanding geological displays.
