Schweitzer-Mountain
is the location of a popular ski resort in Idahos northern panhandle. The resort is about 11 miles northwest of the city of Sandpoint. Located in the Selkirk Mountains, Schweitzer Mountain overlooks Lake Pend Oreille to the southeast with views of the Bitterroot and Cabinet mountain ranges. It has an elevation of 6,400 feet. From the top of the mountain, one can see three states, Canada and three mountain ranges. Schweitzer Mountain has a vertical drop of 2,440 feet and approximately 2,900 skiable acres. The average snowfall is over 300 inches. There are 92 named runs and open bowls on Schweitzer Mountain, and the longest continuous run is the Little Blue Ridge Run at 1.7 miles. Ten chair lifts serve terrain rated 20 percent beginner, 40 percent intermediate, 35 percent advanced and 5 percent expert. In summer, theres also all sorts of fun available at Schweitzer Mountain. Visitors enjoy miles of hiking and biking trails, and lift rides that rise 1700 feet in elevation to give panoramic views of Lake Pend Oreille, Canada and beyond. The summer season runs June 26th through September 7th. A summer activity center is available to help visitors decide what to see and where to go. Nearby Sandpoint offers lodging, shopping and restaurants. Other nearby attractions include the Bird Aviation Museum and Invention Center and Cedar Street Bridge, which is the only marketplace located on a bridge in the United States.

The Northern Panhandle Region of Idaho has a four-season climate. Located within the northern latitude, Idaho's Northern Panhandle has summer days that are long and sunny, with just enough rain to keep things very green and pretty. Temperatures can range from very warm in the summer to very cold in the winter. The major mountain ranges accumulate a deep snow cover in the winter. In spring, the melting snow pack provides irrigation water for the lower regions of the state. The major source of moisture for northern Idaho is the Pacific Ocean, although in summer there are some exceptions when moisture-laden air is brought in from the south.
