Soda-Springs is nestled in the mountains in Caribou County in southeast Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the population was 3,381 residents. The town was named for the thousands of natural springs of carbonated water that are located in and around the city. These natural springs were well-known to Native Americans and became a famous landmark along the Oregon Trail. Weary travelers stopped to rest and enjoy the waters bubbling up from the ground. Today, Soda Springs is known as the home of the Soda Springs Geyser, a man-made carbon dioxide generated cold water geyser. Soda Springs offers many recreational opportunities, such as the Highline Recreation Trail, which offers 55 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in and outside of town and a groomed cross-country ski area. Ice fishing is also a popular wintertime sport on Alexander Reservoir, near Soda Springs. Other things to do include hiking in the footsteps of the pioneers as you overlook the spectacular valley and Alexander Reservoir, or go fishing, boating, or camping. Golf is also available at Soda Springs, where one can play right through the ruts left by the wagons on the Oregon Trail. The nine-hole, 36 par golf course is open to the public and golf equipment is available for rent.

Soda Springs Weather & Climate

Southeastern Idaho has a unique four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state. Occasionally, moisture-laden air from the south produces thunderstorms.
