Bear-Lake
is located on the Idaho-Utah border at an elevation of 5,924 feet. It lies along the northeast side of the Wasatch Range on the east side of the Bear River Mountain. Bear Lake is often called the "Caribbean of the Rockies" due to its beautiful turquoise blue color, which is the result of suspended limestone deposits in the water. Bear Lake is over 250,000 years old and was formed by fault subsidence that continues today, slowly deepening the lake along the eastern side. The water in the lake has unique properties that have led to the evolution of several species of fish that live naturally only within Bear Lake. The lake and surrounding area has become a popular summer tourist destination. Bear Lake has several marinas and beaches and two state parks: each is named Bear Lake State Park and one is in Idaho and one in Utah. Activities at the lake include speed boating and sailing, fishing, jet skiing, kayaking, hiking, biking, camping and picnicking. Bear Lake is also home to the annual Raspberry Days Festival in nearby Garden City. This event features parades, a craft fair, talent show, rides and concerts, rodeos, fireworks, and of course, a raspberry recipe cook-off. Another interesting note about Bear Lake is that according to folklore, the lake holds the so-called Bear Lake Monster. Although the person originally responsible for the tale later admitted to having made up the entire story, people continue to report sightings of the monster today.

Bear Lake Weather & Climate
Southeastern Idaho has a unique four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho, although the area is not in the mountains. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state. Occasionally, moisture-laden air from the south produces thunderstorms.
