Donnelly
is a tiny community located in rural Valley County in central Idaho. The estimated population is 150 residents. Donnelly is situated in Long Valley at an elevation of 4,865 feet on the northeast shore of Lake Cascade, or Cascade Reservoir. The town of Donnelly lies between the cities of McCall (13 miles to the north,) and Cascade (16 miles to the south via Highway 55.) The now defunct Tamarack Resort is across the reservoir to the southwest. Lake Cascade is located on the north fork of the Payette River in the Boise National Forest. It is the fourth largest reservoir in the state of Idaho. In addition, there are over 250 smaller lakes and streams in the area. Recreational activities include fishing, swimming, boating and sailing, water skiing, ice fishing, hiking, mountain biking, camping and picnicking. Many natural hot springs are in the area, including the recently developed Gold Fork Hot Springs. The Wildlife Scenic Byway-Highway 55 was recently designated for its natural beauty and abundance of wildlife. It follows the North Fork of the Payette River all the way into the town of Cascade. Other nearby attractions include Roosevelt Lake, Thunder Mountain Train, Snow Bank Mountain Radar Station and sleigh rides to feed the elk. Nearby, the city of Cascade offers shopping and restaurants and is host to the annual 4th of July Thunder Mountain Days, which features a Main Street parade and fireworks display over Lake Cascade.

Central Idaho has four distinct seasons with warm summers and cold winters. Spring comes earlier and winter later to central Idaho, which is protected from severe weather by nearby mountains and call themselves "banana belts." Eastern Idaho has a more continental climate, with more extreme temperatures; climatic conditions there and elsewhere vary with the elevation. Precipitation averages 13 inches per year in the south and over 30 inches in the north. Much greater accumulations of snow are experienced in the mountains. Much of the central plains of the lower elevations of central Idaho receive less than 10 inches of precipitation annually.
