Blackfoot
is located in Bingham County in southeastern Idaho. As of the 2000 census, the population was 10,419 residents. Designated the "Potato Capital of the World," Blackfoot boasts the largest potato industry in the world. It is home to the Idaho Potato Museum that features displays and explains the history of Idahos potato industry. The Museum is also home to the worlds largest baked potato and potato chip. Other attractions in Blackfoot include Jensen Grove Park. The park provides playground equipment and picnicking, a two-mile paved walking path and Jensen Lake, which offers 55 acres of water for swimming, boating, jet skiing and other activities. The city of Blackfoot is home to the Eastern Idaho State Fair, which attracts thousands of visitors during the first week of September. A traditional carnival, horse races, entertainment, agricultural and commercial exhibits and lots of good food can be found at the fair. Blackfoot is also the name of a mountain range and a small river in the area. Other nearby attractions include Hells Half Acre National Landmark and Blackfoot River Canyon. Wolverine Canyon is located just northeast of Blackfoot and offers whitewater rafting, hiking, fishing, camping and cross-country skiing and snowmobiling in the wintertime.

Blackfoot Weather & Climate

Southeastern Idaho has a four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho, although the area is not in the mountains. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state.
