Pocatello is located in southeastern Idaho in Bannock County, with a small portion on the Fort Hall Indian Reservation in Power County. As of the 2000 census, the population of Pocatello was 51,466 residents. It is the fourth largest city in the state and in 2007, the city of Pocatello was ranked 20th on Forbest list of "Best Small Places for Business and Careers." Home of Idaho State University, Pocatello was an important stop on the first railroad in Idaho during the gold rush. It later became an important agricultural center. It lies along the scenic Portneuf River where it emerges from the mountains onto the Snake River Plain, along the route of the Oregon Trail. Pocatello offers everything from rodeos, casino gaming, an Indian Pow Wow, a wild west shootout, to lively nightlife and a new performing arts center. Outdoor recreation abounds and includes excellent fishing, biking and hiking trails, rock climbing, golf, skate boarding, skiing and snowmobiling. In fact, Outdoor Magazine ranks Pocatello number five in its list of "Best Fishing Towns." Other attractions in Pocatello include the Ross Park Aquatic Complex, the Fort Hall Replica, Pocatello Zoo, and the Portneuf Greenway. Pocatello is also home to eight cinemas, four theaters, which includes two dinner theaters, a symphony and summer outdoor bandshell concerts.

Pocatello Weather & Climate

Southeastern Idaho has a four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho, although the area is not in the mountains. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low. Occasionally, moisture-laden air from the south produces thunderstorms.
