Boise
is the capital and most populous city in Idaho. Its located in the southwestern part of the state in Ada County along the Boise River. It is most commonly known by locals as Boise City. The estimated population of Boise is 211,000 with a metropolitan area estimated to be over 500,000 residents. Boise is a hub for culture, music, theater and outdoor recreation. The citys Basque community is the second largest in the nation and the fourth largest in the world outside of Argentina. A large Basque Festival is held in Boise once every five years and there is a vibrant section of downtown known as the Basque Block. Boise is also known for its jazz, with the Gene Harris Jazz Festival hosted in the city each spring. A number of museums are located here, including the Boise Art Museum, Discovery Center of Idaho and the Boise WaterShed Museum. Boise is home to a philharmonic orchestra, opera, ballet and a summer Shakespeare festival that features outdoor performances along the Boise River. On the first Thursday of each month, an gallery stroll is hosted in the citys core business district by the Downtown Boise Association. All of this culture mixes with a number of outdoor recreational opportunities, including hiking and biking in the nearby foothills and an extensive urban trail system called the Boise River Greenbelt that runs along the river. The Boise River itself offers fishing, swimming, boating and rafting. Other attractions include Julia Davis Park and Zoo Boise and the Bogus Basin ski area.

Southwest Idaho has a climate that is characterized as semi-arid with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and dry and temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Winters are cold with moderate amounts of snowfall. Rain is usually infrequent and light, averaging an inch per month. March is the wettest month of the year with an average of 1.41 inches of precipitation. August is the driest month of the year. Spring and fall are generally temperate and quite pleasant. Humidity is low year-round. Rain and snow together in the region average only about 12 inches per year. Spring comes earlier and winter later in this region that is protected from severe weather by nearby mountains.
