Idaho-City
is a historic little town located in Boise County approximately 36 miles northeast of the city of Boise. As of the 2000 census, the population was 458 residents. For history buffs, it doesnt get much better than Idaho City. Founded in 1862 as Bannock (or sometimes called West Bannock,) Idaho City was one of the towns settled amidst the Boise Basin gold rush during the Civil War. This was the largest gold rush since the California rush about a dozen years earlier. With its location near the confluence of the Elk and Mores Creeks, Idaho Citys plentiful water supply allowed it to outgrow the other nearby camps in the basin. As the population grew in what was then called Bannock, the new Idaho Territory legislature changed the towns name to Idaho City to avoid confusion with Bannack, Montana. During its peak in the mid 1860s, there were more than 200 businesses in town, including three dozen saloons. In 1864, the population of the town was 7,000, which made it the largest city in the Northwest at the time. Fire struck the city four times: in 1865, 1867, 1868 and 1871. Most residents departed the mountains, and the town, once the mining declined. Idaho Citys population fell below 900 by 1870 and was down to 104 by 1920. Today, the economy relies on hunting and fishing tourism, and those who come to visit the many historic buildings in town and the old Boot Hill Cemetery.

Southwest Idaho has a climate that is characterized as semi-arid with four distinct seasons. Summers are hot and dry and temperatures often exceed 100 degrees F. Winters are cold with moderate amounts of snowfall. Rain is usually infrequent and light, averaging an inch per month. March is the wettest month of the year with an average of 1.41 inches of precipitation. August is the driest month of the year. Spring and fall are generally temperate and quite pleasant. Humidity is low year-round. Rain and snow together in the region average only about 12 inches per year. Spring comes earlier and winter later in this region that is protected from severe weather by nearby mountains.
