Spirit-Lake
is the name of both a small city and lake located in the northern Idaho Panhandle in Kootenai County. The population of the city was 1,376 as of the 2000 census. Although small in population, there are tons of activities at Spirit Lake. Situated on State Highway 41, just 10 miles north of Rathdrum and within easy driving distance of both Coeur dAlene and Spokane, the area is served by two resorts. The lake has twelve miles of shoreline, is 4.5 miles long and is 100 feet at its deepest. Spirit Lake is also the highest of all the small lakes in the Inland Empire region of Idaho, at 2,400 feet. The majestic Selkirk Mountains are to the west and north and the lake is surrounded by lush forests and hiking and biking trails on all sides. The town offers a city park with a public beach, boat ramp and dock. Recreational activities include swimming, boating, fishing, water skiing, hiking and biking, cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, ice fishing, scenic drives and historical tours. Spirit Lake is also near two excellent golf courses, Stoneridge and Twin Lakes. In addition, a farmers market is located at Spirit Lake during the summer months. The city hosts an old-fashioned Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks in July, and Heritage Days in September, with music in the park, mountain men demonstrations, steam engines, food vendors and other activities.

Spirit Lake Weather & Climate

Northern Idaho has a distinct four-season climate. Located within the northern latitude, Idaho's Northern Panhandle has summer days that are long and sunny, with just enough rain to keep things very green and pretty. Temperatures can range from very warm in the summer to very cold in the winter. The major mountain ranges accumulate a deep snow cover in the winter. In spring, the melting snow pack provides irrigation water for the lower regions of the state. The major source of moisture for northern Idaho is the Pacific Ocean, although in summer there are some exceptions when moisture-laden air is brought in from the south.
