Post-Falls
is located in Kootenai County in northern Idaho four miles east of the state line between Spokane, Washington and Coeur dAlene, Idaho. The population in 2008 was 25,358 residents. The city is bounded by the Spokane River to the south and the Rathdrum Prairie to the north. Post Falls is approximately 100 miles south of the Canadian border. The town began as a lumber mill town when Frederick Post, a German immigrant, constructed a mill along the Spokane River in 1871 on land he purchased from the chief of the Coeur dAlene tribe. The purchase of the land is perserved in a pictograph on a granite cliff in Treaty Rock Park. Post Falls lies within the heart of a scenic area of numerous lakes, rivers, streams and mountains. Tourism is an important part of the economy, with an increasing number of dining, entertainment and retail businesses opening up in the city. Also, Post Falls has become a popular retirement community. The town is served by Interstate 90, which extends east to west through the panhandle. Post Falls is also approximately two miles east of the junction of State Highway 41, and seven miles west of State Highway 95, which extends to the length of Idaho to Canada.

Northern Idaho has a distinct four-season climate. Located within the northern latitude, Idaho's Northern Panhandle has summer days that are long and sunny, with just enough rain to keep things very green and pretty. Temperatures can range from very warm in the summer to very cold in the winter. The major mountain ranges accumulate a deep snow cover in the winter. In spring, the melting snow pack provides irrigation water for the lower regions of the state. The major source of moisture for northern Idaho is the Pacific Ocean, although in summer there are some exceptions when moisture-laden air is brought in from the south.
