Ashton
is a small, rural community located in southeastern Idaho, about 18 miles from Yellowstone National Park. Its also just 24 miles from Grand Teton National Park and close to Mesa Falls and Henrys Fork on the Snake River. The population was 1,129 residents at the 2000 census. Known as the "Worlds Largest Seed Producing Area," Ashton welcomes almost two million visitors each year who travel through this very scenic area. The town of Ashton is surrounded by natural beauty as it sits at the junction of two Scenic Byways - Mesa Falls Scenic Byway and Teton Scenic Byway. The rivers, lakes, streams, lush forests and majestic mountains all offer unparalleled outdoor recreational opportunities. In addition, Ashton is host to several annual events, including the American Dog Derby, Mountain Man Rendezvous, the Mesa Falls Marathon and a spectacular 4th of July Celebration. Other natural attractions in the area include Ashton Reservoir, Herriman State Park, Island Park Reservoir, Big Springs, St. Anthony Sand Dunes, Targhee National Forest and Winter Trails Teton Scenic Route. Four seasons of activities include fly-fishing, hiking, rafting, horseback riding, snow skiing, sledding, snowmobiling and snowshoeing.

Ashton Weather & Climate

The upper corner of southeastern Idaho has a unique four-season climate. The area's precipitation is approximately 20-30 inches, which is among the highest in southern Idaho, although the area is not in the mountains. This unusually high precipitation is due to the unique geography of southern Idaho and Yellowstone. The Snake River Plain was formed by the Yellowstone hot spot across southern Idaho, and it forms a moisture channel that extends from the Pacific Ocean to Yellowstone area. This southeastern corner at the head of the Snake River Plain and at the end of the Yellowstone moisture channel gets as much snow as the typical ski towns of Colorado. In contrast, summers are hot and humidity is low throughout the state.
